Find Johnson County Released Inmates

Johnson County released inmates can be tracked through the Sheriff's daily booking and release report, which lists who left custody over the past week. People search for recently released Johnson County inmates to confirm a release, plan a pickup, or set up a custody alert. The county jail tools cover local custody, while state and federal releases use separate systems. A Johnson County released inmate search can run by name through the report, by prior booking history, or through a notification service that alerts you when custody status changes. Knowing which system holds the record keeps the search on track.

How to Find Recently Released Johnson County Inmates

The Sheriff publishes releases through the Booking and Release Report, not a separate long-range archive. The report has a Released section and date buttons for today and the previous seven days. For a named person, the inmate search has a three-year previous booking history option that returns prior booking and release details.

The report shows release date and time, release type, and release location, along with the same identity, booking, arrest, and charge fields as booked entries. It is the fastest way to see who left county custody in the last week. Because it is a live operational tool rather than a permanent database, treat it as a snapshot and check it close to the date you care about.

Johnson County booking and release report for released inmates

The date buttons let you step back day by day through the last week of releases.

Reading the Booking and Release Report

The report splits into Booked and Released sections, plus a daily inmate distribution table. Each release entry carries the person's identity fields and the release details. Because the report only goes back seven visible days, it is a short-term tool, not a permanent record of every release.

  1. Open the report and pick a date button from the last seven days.
  2. Scroll to the Released section for that day.
  3. Match the name, then read release date, time, type, and location.
  4. For older releases, use the inmate search prior booking history option.

For the name-based history search, see the steps on the Johnson County inmate records page.

What a Johnson County Release Entry Shows

A release entry carries more than a name and a date. The Sheriff's report keeps the same identity, booking, arrest, and charge fields as a booked entry, then adds the release details. That makes it possible to see not just that someone was released, but how and when.

FieldWhat It Shows
Name and CFNFull name and Criminal File Number
Booking Date and TimeWhen the person was booked into custody
Arresting AgencyThe agency and arrest date and time
Release Date and TimeWhen the person left custody
Release TypeHow the release happened, such as bond or court order
Charges and BondCharge, bond, and disposition fields

Note: The public report shows year of birth rather than a full date and does not expose sensitive identifiers.

Setting Up Release Notifications

To be alerted when custody status changes, use Kansas VINE through VINELink. The Kansas Attorney General says VINE lets victims and the public search county jail custody status and register for phone or email notifications. The service is free, confidential, and voluntary. Kansas VINE covers county jail offenders, but not state prison offenders held by the Department of Corrections.

Register through the VINELink custody status portal. Notifications can reach you by phone or email, so you do not have to keep checking a report by hand.

VINE alerts are useful when you want to know about a release before it shows up in a report.

Searching State Released Inmates with KASPER

People released from state prison or under state supervision are tracked by the Kansas Department of Corrections, not the county jail. The KDOC KASPER search includes people sentenced to the custody of the Secretary of Corrections since 1980, those currently incarcerated, those on post-incarceration supervision, and those discharged from sentence. It updates daily except weekends.

Searching Federal Released Inmates

Federal custody is separate again. The Federal Bureau of Prisons runs its own inmate locator, which searches by name or by number. It is the right tool when a Johnson County resident is in or released from federal custody rather than county or state custody.

Verifying a Release in Person or by Phone

When online data is unclear or the question is urgent, call the jail. Confirm a release through Central Booking at 913-715-5100 or the New Century Adult Detention Center at 913-715-5900. Start with the current inmate search, and if no current result appears, switch to the three-year previous booking history with a first and last name.

A clean current search usually means the person is no longer in county custody. It does not, by itself, confirm where they went, so the booking and release report and a phone call together give the clearest picture. Keep in mind the report only spans the last seven days, so a release older than a week will not appear there and is better confirmed by phone or through the prior booking history search.

Timing matters too. The jail tools and the court portal update on different schedules, and a release can post before a court file reflects it. If you are coordinating a pickup or a bond, call the holding facility directly rather than relying on a single online screen.

The Sex Offender Registry

After release, some people must register as offenders. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation runs the statewide registered offender search, and Johnson County keeps a local offender map updated daily by the Sheriff. The local map searches by address, name, or city.

The statewide tool is the KBI registered offender registry, which pairs with the local map covered on the public records page.

Parole, Probation, and Reentry Resources

VINE is custody notification, not case management. For supervision after release, KDOC and county community corrections are the right contacts. Johnson County Community Corrections and Court Services handle supervision locally, and several agencies support reentry.

Court Services, which also runs the Veterans Treatment Court, can be reached at 913-715-7400. Other local groups support people after release, including Mental Health, Safehome for domestic violence, and MOCSA for sexual assault survivors. These contacts also appear across the District Attorney's victim and juvenile resource lists, so a single release can connect to several support services depending on the case.

Civil Rights Restoration After Release

Kansas generally restores voting rights after a person completes their sentence. Confirm the exact steps with the Kansas Secretary of State before relying on a date. Firearm rights after a felony or an expungement need a closer, statute-specific look, and K.S.A. 21-6614 includes firearm considerations for some expungements while excluding serious offenses.

To limit public access to an eligible record after release, the expungement process applies. The forms and fees are listed on the arrest records page. Expungement is filed in the convicting court, which for a Johnson County case is the District Court in Olathe, and a granted order is sent to the KBI and other agencies so their records reflect the change.
