Johnson County Jail Roster Overview
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office runs the inmate search and the daily booking and release report. The agency employs more than 450 sworn deputies and over 125 civilian staff, and it operates two adult detention centers. The inmate search shows people currently in custody and, with a separate option, three years of prior booking history. The Sheriff updates this data as bookings and releases happen.
The roster has limits. It covers Johnson County jail custody, not the Kansas Department of Corrections prisons or federal custody. If someone is not in the county roster, they may be in state prison, in another county, or held by a federal agency. Those searches use different tools, including the state and federal locators described below.
The Sheriff actually offers two related tools. The inmate search is name-based and best for finding a specific person and their charges. The daily booking and release report lists everyone booked or released over the past week, with arresting agency and arrest time. The report is the better choice for recent activity, while the inmate search is the better choice for a named person.
The Sheriff's inmate search explanation page describes the current custody search and the three-year history option.
It also notes that prior booking history needs both a first and last name.
How to Use the Johnson County Inmate Roster
The inmate search lives on the Sheriff's jims.jocosheriff.org system, linked from the county pages. Enter a name, pick current custody or prior history, and open a result for the full detail view. There is no fee and no login.
- Open the Sheriff inmate search portal.
- Type a last name and first name.
- Choose Show Currently in Custody, or switch to Show Previous Booking History.
- Click a result to open the profile with charges, bond, and court dates.
Start at the Johnson County Sheriff inmate search portal.
The portal defaults to current custody and resets to it when you clear the fields.
Roster Search Fields
The search keeps to a few fields. Names drive the search, and a radio button switches between current custody and prior bookings. The portal does not ask for a booking number to start a search.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | Yes | Official instructions say enter first and last name |
| First Name | Text | Yes for history | Required when using the three-year history option |
| Show Currently in Custody | Radio | Default | Searches current inmates |
| Show Previous Booking History | Radio | Optional | Returns prior bookings for the last three years |
| Search / Reset | Button | Yes | Runs or clears the search |
Note: Result columns show last name, first name, middle, year of birth, sex, and race, with a button to expand details.
What a Johnson County Inmate Profile Shows
Open a result and the profile expands. For current inmates it shows the detention location and a visit scheduling link. For historic bookings it shows booking and release dates. Both show a charge and bond table. The public view uses year of birth, not a full date, and it hides sensitive identifiers.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name and CFN | Full name and the Criminal File Number |
| Mugshot | A booking photo when one is available |
| Year of Birth, Race, Sex | Basic identifiers; full date of birth is not shown |
| Detention Location | Olathe Central Booking or New Century, for current inmates |
| Booking / Release Date | Booking number and dates for historic bookings |
| Charges and Bond | Charge, bond amount and type, disposition, court location, court date and time |
Note: Court dates and times can change, so confirm a first appearance in CaseSearch after 11:00 a.m. on the listed day.
Johnson County Jail Facilities
The county runs two adult detention centers. Central Booking in Olathe is the centralized booking and pre-classification point, and all county law enforcement agencies can bring arrestees there. The New Century Adult Detention Center holds the larger housing population. Together the system has 1,081 beds.

Both facilities use direct supervision and are accredited for correctional health care.
Booking Process in Johnson County
After an arrest, a person is taken to Central Booking in Olathe. Intake records identity, the arresting agency, and the charges, and staff complete a pre-classification step before housing. Central Booking opened in 1988 as a direct-supervision facility, which places deputies inside housing units for closer contact with inmates rather than behind a glass control booth.
A first appearance follows booking, where charges and bond are addressed. The inmate profile shows the court location and the scheduled court date and time. Because those settings can move, the safest plan is to verify the date through the court portal on the day it is listed.
Central Booking vs. New Century
The two facilities play different roles, which is why the inmate location field matters. Central Booking in Olathe is where arrests come in and where pre-classification happens. New Century, the larger facility off 159th Street, is the main housing center. A person can be booked in Olathe and later moved to New Century, so the location shown on a profile reflects the current spot, not the booking spot.
| Central Booking (Olathe) | New Century | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Booking and pre-classification | Main adult housing |
| Address | 101 North Kansas Avenue | 27745 West 159th Street |
| Phone | 913-715-5100 | 913-715-5900 |
| Opened | 1988, reopened 2012 | 2000, Phase II 2009 |
Visitation Rules and Scheduling
Adult visits are scheduled through SmartJailMail, the link shown on a current inmate's profile. The Sheriff publishes detailed visitation rules rather than a fixed public weekly grid, so confirm a slot through the scheduling system. The rules below come straight from the adult detention visitation page.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Identification | Valid, non-expired government photo ID required |
| Arrival | Arrive 15 minutes before the visit for check-in |
| Age | Visitors must be 18 or with a parent or legal guardian |
| Visitors per visit | One adult per inmate visit; a child under six is a lap child |
| Screening | All visitors pass through a metal detector; property goes in lockers |
| Dress | Proper dress required; revealing or staff-like clothing is barred |
Note: Visits can be denied or ended for intoxication, falsified ID, refusal of screening, or disruptive behavior.
How to Contact an Inmate
Mail runs through Smart Communications and the MailGuard service, which is free. General mail goes to the inmate name and CFN, care of Smart Communications, P.O. Box 9176, Seminole, FL 33775-9176, and is delivered on kiosks or tablets. Legal mail and pre-approved packages use the Olathe facility address at 101 North Kansas Avenue and must be clearly marked.
Photos are uploaded through Smart Communications, and explicit or inappropriate images are rejected. Mail questions go to 913-715-5900, and rejected-mail appeals go to DetentionMailroomAppeals@jocogov.org. Visit scheduling and messaging both run through the SmartJailMail login.
Commissary and Inmate Funds
Money can be added to an inmate account through JailATM at deposits.jailatm.com, or by phone at 1-866-335-2734, Option 1. The Detention Bureau lists Smart Communications as the vendor for inmate mail and visitation. Phone and video rates are set by the vendors, and the county does not publish those prices, so confirm current rates with Smart Communications or JailATM before paying.
Jail Programs and Medical Care
Both detention centers are accredited through the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. Medical, mental, and dental care are provided through a contracted health provider. Beyond health care, the jail offers substance abuse classes, religious programs, anger management, work programs, and a law library.
These programs matter for anyone tracking an inmate over a longer stay. They also tie into the county's wider work on diversion and mental health, which aims to keep some people out of jail and into treatment. New Century's design even earned regional and national architecture-for-justice awards when it opened, and Phase II in 2009 added 554 beds to bring the system to its current 1,081-bed capacity.
State and Federal Inmate Searches
When a person is not in the county jail, two other tools help. The Kansas Department of Corrections runs KASPER for people in state prison or under state supervision. The Federal Bureau of Prisons runs its own inmate locator. Both are free and national or statewide in scope.
KASPER includes people sentenced to the custody of the Secretary of Corrections since 1980, those currently incarcerated, those under post-release supervision, and those discharged. It updates daily except weekends. The KDOC locating a resident page explains how to use it.
The search itself starts at the KASPER offender search after a disclaimer page.
For federal custody, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator, which searches by name or number.
For recent county releases and custody notifications, see released inmates.
